A Theology of Giving

Thank you for being willing to support our church financially. This is what the church has always done and it is the Biblical model in the 1st century. Pastor Timothy spoke of the rich and said not "to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy" and. "to be generous and ready to share. (I Timothy 6:17-18)" We are never promised financial abundance because of our giving. And that's OK! We are looking forward to something far greater: eternal life with our eternal Creator. Dr. Luke said it well, " Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. (Luke 12:33)" Our eternal life is secure!

As we consider giving, we surely must remember that "every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change (James 1:17)." Our money is not our own, it belongs to our immutable Father, who delights in us! Sharing what we have is a joy to Him, "for such sacrifices are pleasing to God (Hebrews 13:16)."

Always know where your treasure is, because " where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21)." Whatever you treasure will most certainly capture your heart. And if material possessions have captured your heart... beware. "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. (I Timothy 6:10)." So, "keep your life free from the love of money. (Hebrews 13:5)." And simply "be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).”

Please be sure that you don't view giving as an outward show, supposing that it will please God, when you're holding on to sin in your life. Remember the words of Jesus when He said, " “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others (Matthew 23:23)." So do both!

Remember that God gave to you, his only Son, Jesus Christ, so that you could escape his wrath and be granted His eternal life (John 3:16). What a joy it is to share in giving back to God. "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9)." And what riches we have, friend. Marvel in it. "Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God (Romans 11:33)! Never let these truths get old. "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us... (Ephesians 1:7-8a)." The grace of God is the best motivator to give. GRACE = God's Riches At Christ's Expense.

So let this be a time of worship for you; giving back to your King some of what He has given to you. And with these things in mind, how could we not give cheerfully? "God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7)."
